Spread the love at Sea Mart.
Help us take pride in where we live and let’s keep Sitka clean and beautiful. Thank you to our customers who brought their plastic bag concerns to us, we always greatly appreciate our customers reaching out with concerns, thoughts, and feedback, and we address everyone with thought and consideration.
‘Tis the season of love and we want to spread the love of developing healthy habits for every individual. Here are some ways you can Reduce, Reuse and Recycle at Sea Mart and in our community.
We currently offer plastic bags that are made from 100% recycled materials and are 100% recyclable themselves. They are larger and more durable than your average plastic bags which allows for more items per bag thus reducing the amount of bags, plus you can reuse or recycle them! These bags are less expensive than paper which helps save the trees, and we are able to trickle those pennies to YOU – our valued customers. Once you use our bags, it’s up to you with what you do with them next.
We also offer a reusable bag library, where you can borrow a reusable tote or bring in your extras for the community to share. It’s a great way to be plastic free and help a neighbor out. They are located near the front of the store so just grab a few and put them in your cart when you come in, and you can drop any unused ones back off when you exit.
If you’re concerned about reusing plastic bags at the store, they also make great small waste bin liners, they’re great for pet waste clean-up, and you can even use them as packaging material for shipping breakables. Try searching “Plastic Bag Products” on the web and you can see even more ways to reuse your bags. However, the best way? Recycle them with us. Every week we ship used bags back to Seattle for recycling, it’s a great way to get them off the island and ensure they make it to the right recycling location.
We are also working on making our very own reusable canvas bags and hope to have them soon. Can you say “Captain Sea Mart approved?” We hope to have them available at registers by April so you can sport them on all your adventures. Canvas totes are great for car camping, the beach and picnics since they are more durable than plastic.
At the end of the day, we do feel it’s each individual’s responsibility to use/reuse/recycle/dispose of plastic bags, and we will continue to support you in developing healthy habits. If you have ideas to share, please reach out in the comments below.
